Parameter to thin textures

Posted

I find myself often having to put far too much notes in a piece, simply because its easy with SF and ears adapt so fast.

Starting from one fixed parent phrase, which SF parameters can be used to gradually reduce the density without destructive reworking the phase, but rather one of many possible variations, which still resembles its parents character but is modifyable ?

I am aware of skip, but this seems too algorithmic and predictable often.

Rhythm Parameter is my usual go to. As far as I can tell it changes the volumes of the phrase at the specified rhythmic time, you can bring it all the way down to zero and use that to thin out a phrase. Not sure if has effects on the actual timing, I have had experiences where I could swear one or the other was, or wasn't happening.

Step is another similar one but the way I see it, it more chops up the figure and allows you to place those slices in the times specified by the pink lines.

Ha! Welcome to the club. At the core of this challenge is indeed the speed with which ears are adapting to homemade chaos.

I think it's a great problem to have, though. The chaos makes your head hear nice melodies, rhythms and sequences (which are sometimes not even there if you look close). Just be disciplined enough to carve them out and delete everything else. I sometimes record them by hand and then delete the rest.

Less is more. Just figure out which less.
