Progressions and layers, wow!

Posted

I just figured out how layers work with superimposition, still need to figure out how to assign different instruments to each layer, but that will come later.

Just gotta say that's absolutely amazing, such a massive wall of sound you can create.

Yesterday I figured out how to use the chord palette to modulate and it's so easy that I'm just flying though keys, and now this.

I just have a huge smile on my face right now.

I'm realizing more and more that my money on Synfire pro was well spent :D

The Layer parameter accepts values 1, 2, 3, 4. This assigns a progression layer to the instrument. You can even switch layers in the middle of a container, if you want :D

It sounds like you are achieving lots!

Can you make a short gif of your discoveries both modulation and layers superimposition?

It would be highly appreciated by many of us!

Best wishes for your creativity to flourish even more.

A gif would be very long and large, there's quite a few steps to make it happen, but I'll try to explain it below.

First make a progression in the progression editor, make sure you use lots of 4 note chords, as 3 note chords won't give you any additional chords to chose from.

From the Transform menu, select "layer"  and then "Auto create 2 layers"

Now if you look at the progression editor, you will have 2 extra tabs named "layer 1" and "layer 2"

Click on "layer 1", everywhere you have a 4 note chord in the base progression, you can select that chord and click on "pick subchord" and a list of suggestions will pop up.

If you click on the chords in the base progression tab you will hear all the chords play on top of eachother, good to preview what you're doing.

Now go back to the arragement by clicking on the instruments tab.

Create 3 instruments set to different sounds.

Leave the first instrument as is, it will be using the base progression.

Select the second instrument and click on the "layer" header, there will be a slider, set it to 1 to base this instrument on the progression you created in "layer 1"

Do the same for the 3rd track but set the layer slider to 2 to base that instrument on "layer 2"

That's it, start recording on the 3 instruments and listen to what happens, try recording some chords to make it obvious to hear.

Thanks for that. But I'm only seeing a choice of two chords - the original chord or it's relative minor. Hardly wow in my book but I'm obviously missing something here. I'll have another go at it later.

It depends a lot of what chords and extensions you pick in the base progression, try something large like a C7(9,11,13) and you'll see a lot more to pick from.

Thank you for sharing your findings in a very clear manner. :yeah:

I had experimenting with this, but I was not able to go beyond creating the layers. I now see clearly how to do it.

I, like you believe this software is invaluable.

Keep the music flowing!

Hi all

Thanks Ken to your Explanations about Progressions layers, also our dear friend Codetronx did a good contribution.

You can search the thread,i dont remember the title.

There i expressed a suggestion about to introduce the possibility to change the inversions of the chords created in the layers.

And now introduce the suggestion that it would be fantastic that when you select and instrument (in the arrangement) the harmony progression layer assigned to that instrument would be showed  on the tob because to see it there you need to go to progression tab and select the layer.

And also when you select in the instruments parameter the harmony tab and checked Display selected Parameters it would be nice to see the harmony progression layer assigned each instrument

Abd also if you apply double click in the arrangement to one instrument appears the phrase editor and select tab Harmony would be nice to see the harmony progression layer assigned to that instrument

That is already possible. You can display other parameters than the figure if you activate the button that I have marked at the attached pictures. You can also display multiple parameters simultaneously. Hold down the Ctrl-key to select multiple parameters. I have attached two pictures: At the first picture the parameter "Layer" is in the foreground and the figure is in the background. At the second picture it is reversed.

Hello Synfire Admin Team,

Can all this visual examples become part of  the wiki or a library where we can find them later for further study?

It will be a great service to the community of learners.

Thanks

Hi all

Juergen Thanks;yes ;I knew that.

With my limited english i express bad

See my examples liceCap  and it would be more understandable

You can see in all the examples that the progressions harmonies showed are the same in the three instruments outside what layer are assigned to and the one showed on top depends you what tab select in progression editor

The idea that i wish is that in each instrument shows when you push the tab of harmony in parameter inspector the harmony progression layer that is assignaded to each instrument, no always the Global harmony

My desire is the example Progression-Layers3.gif

Thanks

Best Regards

Now I understood. Makes perfect sense. The harmony display for the container should show the base progression and the harmony display at the instruments should show the chords of the assigned layers. As it is now, it looks almost like a bug.

Hi

Juergen, now you have understood perfectly my message:

The harmony display for the container should show the base progression and the harmony display at the instruments should show the chords of the assigned layers

We hope that  in next update apply this idea

Excuse my english,it is a little strange but with visual examples is better
