Small issue with playing Sketches

Posted

I'm using Transient MIDI Drones, but some of the playback sketches aren't working correctly.  I expect I'm doing something wrong but I'm not sure what it is.

See attached GIF.  Can you help please?

You must first to try to setup a general midi HAlion 5 rack for the global sounds for the replay phrases  in Synfire..if this works you can try to add a global transient rack in Cubase.

To get the playback with the right soundassigning you can make a sketch from one ( i did ) and then look at the soundassigning of the sketch..in my case it used the wrong internal GM device description..i chanced it to the Halion5 GM rack global sounds rack.

Now it seems that all playback phrases are assigned to the General Midi HAlion 5 global rack ..if this works 100 %.. you must try to connect a transient GM HAlion5 rack ( i try this too )

Edit current sketch seems to point to by default to the internal GM device description..so this is a problem
Ok solved i must assign a Sketch rack ...( edit Current sketch seems to be  not related to the playback phrases for the soundassigning ? )

Ah yes, I see.  If I do Playback >> Edit Current Sketch, it shows that mostly the instruments are assigned to internal GM sounds.  The Combo sketch I selected was already assigned to my transient Global Instruments drone, which is why it worked.

It shouldn't be a problem, I will just need to update the sketches to point to my drones.  Alternatively, I could set up a transient GM drone I suppose. Thanks for your help Jan.

One final issue, the Edit Current Sketch is not available for Chords Only Mode, so I can't get the strings to sound if I wanted to use something other than a GM sound.  How do you change the instruments for the Chords Only Mode?

Plus, there is still the issue why it showed no DAW present for the Electronic sketch.  Perhaps Andre will have to answer that one.

When you play a chord palette in chord only mode, the Global Instrument "Chords" is used. It is set to an internal Windows GM sound by default, but you can change that of course. Open the Audio&Midi setup and go to the "Global Sounds" tab. There you will find the six global sounds Piano, Chords, Bass, Guitar, Drums and Metronome and there you can change the sounds of each of them.

Thanks Juergen, but I perhaps should have explained originally that I already have a drone set up to access the global sounds.  In fact, if you look at the Cubase mixer in the GIF, those were the sounds being played when I selected the Combo sketch for playback.  For some reason, the Chords sound is not being accessed when I select the Chords Only Mode.

I see. And if you go to the Global Instruments tab, the sound assignment for the Chords Instrument shows that it is correctly connected with your drone?

Yes, that's what I meant to illustrate by showing the mixer with the Combo sketch.  The drone is functioning perfectly well normally.  I was just trying some of the sketches today and came across this issue.

Strange. The only thing that I can imagine is that the Global Instruments don't like to be connected to transient drones. I have connected them to Engines and it works well, also at palette-surfing in Chords Only mode.

I have now found that if I palette-surf in Chords Only Mode, the chords sound correctly from the drone.  It is only when I expand the notepad, insert a random harmony and press play that the chord sound no longer plays.

So in summary:

  1. I have now added a transient General MIDI drone and the sounds are now playing correctly where I originally reported that they weren't playing (e.g. the Orchestral sketch)
  2. The Chords Only Mode doesn't play the chord sound from the Global Instruments when playing a sketch.  However, it does play for Combo sketches and it also plays when manually clicking chords in the palette
  3. I still get the 'no DAW' message when selecting the Electronics sketches.  Although after clicking 'OK', the sounds now all play correctly (they are accessing the GM drone now)

So I still have two issues (#2 and #3)

That's right, I NEVER save the transient racks in Synfire.  This isn't the error saying the module can't be found, it's the one saying there's no rewire transport in the DAW (but there is).  It only appears for the Electronic sketches, and only then when I hit Play in a palette.

I could tick the option to not show the message again, becuase it all works fine after I OK it, but I'm interested to know what's causing it.

I've checked this now using the Engine and I still get issue #2, i.e. only the bass plays but not the chords.  Maybe it's something to do with my setup but I don't know what.  Could someone else try please if you've got a minute?

The procedure is:

  1. From the Arrangement window, File >> New >> Palette
  2. Click Notepad to extend it
  3. Right-click Harmony and insert a template
  4. Make sure Chords Only Mode is selected from Playback
  5. Hit the Play button below the Notepad area

Do you hear bass and chords, or just bass?

You don't save your transient racks in Synfire .. if you do save them you get a DAW message when you open Synfire.
When accepting to open the DAW connnection in Synfire ..this message should not come back and all must work fine.

Why not save your transient racks first and  look then how it works ...

Just bass. You are right, looks like a bug.
But it's interesting that chords play if you click directly at the chords of the progression at the notepad.

Well I'm glad it's not just me :)

Yes I found that too.  Looks like we need Andre to take a look then.

  1. If playback is not with bass (option), then notebook play is not sounding
  2. If playback is with bass (option), then notebook play is  sounding only bass
  3. Clicking on palette or progression gives chords + bass if bass option is on
  4. Clicking on palette or progression gives only chords if   bass option is off

Did not get around to it yet, so I put it on the list of issues to investigate.
