Snippets Scene Buttons

Posted

Hi,

It would be quite helpful if the Snippets window offered an always-present line of scene buttons, one-per-row.   (ala Ableton and Bitwig and Launchpad hardware)

A Scene Button, of course, would schedule all the clips in that row to simultaneously make the next transition.   These would be present for every row, regardless of matrix size.

I realize the Memory buttons  (A - F, exactly 6) are the current implementation of "scenes" in Synfire Snippets.

The memory buttons, bless them, recall an arbitrary set of clips for the next transition, no need for them to be in a pre-made row.  We absolutely need that, so bravo!   In fact, Ableton and Bitwig need that too!

But that doesn't eliminate the utility of "normal" row-based linear-set scenes.

Having both would make Synfire the leader of the pack for matrix-oriented playback, and would give the user maximum flexibility for both pre-making scenes and capturing/recalling serendipitous combinations on-the-fly.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, Snippets in one of my favorite features in Synfire. I didn't realize just how powerful it is until I invested more time into it. At first, I felt it was missing a "Scene" function, a la Ableton and Bitwig. But the more I used Snippets, the more I realized that I preferred the memory buttons because of how I use Snippets. I do not object to Scenes, I just hope that this is not an "either/'or" thing for Andre. If I were forced to chose between the two I would prefer memory buttons.

That said, because I love Snippets so much I hope that improvements are on the roadmap. One idea I've had floating in my mind is what if Synfire had Follow Actions. At the very least, I'd like to be able to have the option to trigger clips as "one-shots" if I so desire. Sometimes I want clips to loop. But sometimes I just want a clip to play once and stop at the end.

Not to belabor the point, as this is a request that has already been acknowledged by Andre, but the one feature I am looking forward to most is the possibility of TouchOSC support. Not just for launching clips in Snippets, but for other functions as well (like controlling parameters in the Factory tab). I decided to treat myself to Push 3 for the holidays and I can't remember the last time I had this much fun. Ableton Live has been a unique DAW from the beginning, but Push takes it to another level for me. It feels like Ableton Live turns into an instrument that I can interact with. Something that appeals to me as a (very bad) guitar player. My ultimate dream would be the release of a Max for Live device that bridges the gap between Synfire and Ableton so that I could easily transfer data between the two and use Push to launch clips in Synfire and edit figures. Yes, I realize this is pure fantasy and will never happen. I would be more than happy with TouchOSC.
