I realize it would be a pretty big undertaking, but have you considered making a semantic zooming interface for chord selection--i.e., one that would continuously alter the display of chords depending on the preceding harmonic movement, user preferences, etc?

The palette's coloring schemes do this aleady. Although only the colors change, not the palette layout.
