Snippets by reference (Pour into Existing Arrangement)

Posted

Hi,

Observation:

When a Snippets memory is copied (dragged) to the Structure timeline it is copied, with all it's internal data (phrases), to a new container and there is no further relation of that container to the Snippets of origin (other than the name, e.g. 'Slot A').

Please confirm this is a correct observation.

This being the case, any ordered sequence of Snippets memory containers that you create on the Structure timeline cannot act as a template into which to "pour" new snippets by updating the Snippets matrix.

As an alternative to the way things are now (don't take that away! <g>), it would be another "way to build" capability if it were possible for an Arrangement to be made from snippets (e.g. by dragging, or by saving session) entirely by reference to the Snippets slots (and/or memories) rather than by duplicative copies.

In this way a complex/complete arrangement could be built and then become entirely different musically by reloading the Snippets matrix with new snippets (and/or Snippets memories).

Thinking along this line also suggests to me two new file/library types:

  1.  Save/load full snippets matrix.
  2.  Save/load all snippets memories.

Snippets are not meant to be variables or placeholders for something in the arrangement. This kind of referencing is incredibly complex to keep track of. Both in the code and in the user's brain.

You would rather use aliases for that kind of referencing.
