Synfire not yet compatible with macOS Sequoia

Posted

We are still fixing problems with the installer on macOS Sequoia. Please don't yet update mission critical systems to macOS Sequoia (Synfire still runs fine on Sonoma).

Apple has again drastically hardened code signature and notarization requirements. This time there is no workaround (like right-click and Open). Software that doesn't 100% comply with the new rules is completely rejected. This policy change forced us to redo most of the installation, packaging and code signing procedures. It takes longer (and is harder) than expected, because Synfire is hybrid code that doesn't easily fit into this structure. It still take a few days. We are not alone. We already received emails from other developers that are facing the same challenges.

In general we recommend waiting with a macOS upgrade until Apple releases the first minor update (at least). New major macOS versions often cause  issues with audio software and hardware.

We don't update development machines before at least the 3rd or so minor version has been released by Apple. The only way to avoid weeks of scrambling with non-working tool chains, broken networking and dysfunctional infrastructure is to stay one version behind. The "consumers first" policy that mainly focusses on shiny new gadgets and features is not ideal for developers.

Only virtual machines and disposable one-off Macs are updated early for testing purposes.
