Functions/ Limitations of ReWire with SFE

Posted

Is ReWire a SFE feature?

In Cubase with ReWire active and the proper order of opening programs, i.e., first Cubase, then Synfire, transport in Cubase has no effect. However, transport in Synfire will start Cubase transport, but there is no positional interchange.

No limitation in SFE. It supports full ReWire transport sync.

Load "Transport" ReWire module in Cubase and check the Playback menu under External Synchronization in Synfire.

Just to clarify, I should be able to run and stop from both transports, correct?

What about loop? Does only Cubase loop work? Or does it work from SFE if Cubase transport is not in recycle mode?

Hmmm ... then something is not working. I use rewire frequently. Normally in Cubase as master I simply go to the  Device Menu and open the rewire device. I did that with 'Transport.' I opened SFE and checked that the sync option was ticked.

No success in Win7 x64 running Cubase 64. Maybe I have to run Cubae 32? Strange that hitting the start transport in SFE got Cubase rolling, though.

Please let me know if I must run Cubase 32 for it to work. I seem to recall something about no x64 ReWire implementation.

Otherwise, could someone please check SFE on a Win 7 x64?

Thanks.

It is a master and slave story for Rewire : probably SFP/E cannot act as a slave ( only as a master )

The DAW follows Synfire's transport, not the other way around. Although Synfire also stops when the DAW stops. Synfire needs to run ahead of the DAW. That's why it does not work both ways and why loops can not be synched. You can set loops in the DAW or Synfire, but the other host will continue playing linear.

You need to load the 64 bit ReWire "Transport" on Cubase 64 bit.

I'll look at it later, as since I was having some audio glitches, I uninstalled the audio engine to see if that was the culprit ... it wasn't.

I did get Cubase 32 working as you describe and, now that I understand what it can and cannot do, I guess 64 was working as it should.

FWIW, it took me several times of opening and closing SFE to get it to recognize the Cubase Transport.

Apparently something corrupted in my Cubase 32 install as Cubase 64 and all other audio apps work fine.

Would it be possible for the 'record' button in the SFE transport to trigger record in the rewired DAW? That would make it very useful to me ... otherwise for my work flow, there's not much there.

No, neither ReWire nor VST or AU support this.
