When it comes to music theory, I'm just a beginner. So ... be gentle, please.
I think a midi file I want to import is a song in 12/8 ... but I am not certain.
The reason i think this is because when I open the drum track in my daw and set the grid to 1/8th triplets, every thing lines up with the kick on 1 and 7 and the snare on 4 and 10, but hats, toms and other things hitting other grid marker intervals exactly on the triplet grid.
First, can some one tell me if when I have results like this in a DAW grid, that indicates a time signature of 12/8?
Now, when I go to import a sketch based upon the midi file, do I need to manually adjust the time signature on the import page to correct time signature? The time signature 4/4 is reported, but I don't know if this is the default or indicating that HN2 believes the song in the files is 4/4.
And also, when I create a song, do I need to also enter the same time signature in the song for the phrases to play back correctly?
Or, if I import with the correct time signature, can I use the non-static content with other time signatures in songs? As in, if it sounds good, it is good? Or while I run into timing problems if everything doesn't use the same time signature base?
Thanks,
Prado

No worries about time signatures. You can combine any material you want.
As in, if it sounds good, it is good?
Yes!
On import the time signature is used to analyze the input (rhythm, harmony), so it is an important information that should not be missed. Many midi files do not include this information. You may need to fix the file in an external editor before import. Changing the time signature on the import dialog seems to be ignired (bug?).

By 'fix' in an external editor, do you mean there is a SMF parameter that specifies time signature? If so, something else I need to learn how to do.
I know many type 1 SMF have a header track that I believe contains information that affects all the tracks. But does HN2 know how to read this track? I ask because only the tracks with note data seem to show up as possibilities for import.
And ... can anyone verify that I am correct that an 1/8th triplet grid in the sequencer indicates a 12/8 time signature?
I would like to know this because I want to maintain the time signature/ rhythm from the original song in the midi file.

Yes. It is read from the file. No track is shown for it.
On the import dialog, the time signature should display correctly, or the midi file is incomplete. Open it in a DAW or midi file editor and set the correct time signature. Unfortunately changing it in the import dialog does not work (yet).

i am almost sure ..you do have 4 groups of 1/8 triplets in 12/8 time signature..so a 1/8th triplet grid should work
There are 12 X 1/8 notes in measure of 1/8 notes
