Drag & Drop Export

Posted

Since this did not yet make it into the user manual, here's a description of the Drag & Drop Export:

For Drag & Drop Export, grab a single instrument in the arrange window, a container or even the entire root container and drag it to your DAW. Press the spacebar once to switch to the operating system's native drag mode. A MIDI icon will appear that you can drop on a track in your DAW.

Individual instruments export without meta data (e.g. tempo or chord names). If you need these, you can export the instrument 'Container Defaults', which is the one above the first instrument that bears the container's name. When exporting a container, meta data is always included.

Also, when you export an individual instrument, Synfire will not add a lead-in bar to the exported MIDI track, as is done when a whole container is exported (unless you have disabled this option).

Tip: Synfire always assumes the settings last used for a Standard MIDI File export. In order to change these settings, you need to export to a MIDI file before using the Drag & Drop Export.

Hi Andre, sorry being lazy and havent had a chance to test this. If you drag the root container, or any container for that matter, do you get the midi for all instruments (ie multi channel drag and drop). Is the midi that gets dropped the midi that would get played if you just clicked play on synfire (does it follow all the pauses, nested containers, step, rythem etc)?

Yes.

Yes. It's the excerpt from the whole song that would be exported at the given position and duration.

Is es möglich Synfire mit Pro Tools zu synchroniesieren? so wie Cubase zum beispiel

Finally I got around to test the new drag and drop features. Although André has answered the questions of blacksun already, I really had to try it myself.

Yes, if you drag a container it exports all instruments. In Cubase, as many tracks as needed are generated automatically (like if you would drag from a Drone).

Is the midi that gets dropped the midi that would get played if you just clicked play on synfire (does it follow all the pauses, nested containers, step, rythem etc)?

Yes, indeed it does. The MIDI that gets dropped does not only respect all parameters, such as Pause, Step, Rhythm, and so on, but also all aspects of parameter inheritation.

For example: If the container that you want to export via drag and drop is empty but get its parameters inherited from other containers, then the inherited data is exported when you drop the MIDI at the DAW.

Or: If the exported container contains figures, but these figures are overridden by figures of other containers (completely or in parts), then you get the overriding Midi data from the other containers.

In a word: You get the same as if you just clicked play on Synfire. Very nice.

For me, this is the most important update since I use Synfire. It will have a very big impact on my workflow. Thanks a lot, André.

Andre,

Thank you very much for this new feature.

Drag and Drop worked very well with Reaper and Cubase 7.5. As usual, Logic Pro X was more difficult. I could only suceed when dragging to an area beneath my previously created tracks and then Logic would create two new tracks, one empty and one with the Synfire data. At least that did copy well!

Also, I find that when pressing the space bar to begin drag and drop, Synfire begins to play. Is there an easy way to turn that off?

Thank you

For some reason I cannot get this to work!

I installed the new update twice to make sure.

I have Logic  X, Cubase 7.5 , and Studio One

cannot get drag and drop to work in any of them.

I select a container, hit the space bar once, then try to drag it over to my DAW and i get a little circle icon, which seems to indicate ' can't be done!

I must be doing something wrong and I am sure this is simple!

Is there a video?
