A way of grabbing chord progressions

Posted

Probably a lot of the people here are great musicians and can work out a chord progression just by listening to a track. For the rest of us, we often have to use some sort of tool or find some free midi files.

I've been using the Ableton Live audio harmony to midi function, but with mixed results.

I stumbled across another set of free tools that although not as automated, do seem to produce better results.

The tools are:

Sonic Visualizer: http://www.sonicvisualiser.org/downlo...
Chordino: http://isophonics.net/nnls-chroma/ (a plug in that can be used by sonic visualiser)

And someone has put up a video on how to use them:

I have had mixed results with SV and Chordino. The ability to accurately get chords from audio is still not 100% accurate. Band in a Box has a Audio to midi function that will render you chords but also not the greatest. Hooktheory is something i have spent some time with and seems to be the most accurate. I have had some good results importing audio into ableton live/converting to midi harmony/tweeze the high and low midi to a better range/ imort to SFP/ and maybe inport to Band in a box to render a style. Also quantizing the midi in SFP and importing into xfer Cthulhu for a more playable chord. I seem to always be searching for a way around my paino/harmony deficiency. With a little effort i always seem to get something cool though.

Dude, love to know how you are using cuthulu, seen that and it looks good, just not sure how it works and how useful it is compared to synfire an a library of progressions/the chord palette.

Cthulhu comes with progressions that make it easy to come up with songs very fast. I use it along with squareheadz Nora sometimes and then import into SFP. Routing cthulhu into SFP can yield some cool results but i usually come up with something in Ableton first then export into SFP and BIAB. IF you are looking for chord progressions you cant go wrong with cthulhu and it makes playing the chordal rhythms very cool. I recently got a Ableton push so i am using it to play the cthulhu chords also. Importing  a audio file and converting to midi in Ableton can yield some great chords. its always good to tweeze the midi file before you import it into cthulhu.
