I try to connect Synfire with the GM soundbank of Halion 5 as i did earlier without problems, but now it is not working.
I initialized a general midi bank in the audio& midi setup..but the coloring of the instrument names is green ?
error message: this sound is not yet assigned to a category . Please edit the device ...the rest of the message is unreadable in Synfire ????
In the past a start the GM demo arrangement and put the racks on GM..it is assigning the GM sounds and it works ok
I don't know what the problem is..could it be a virusscanner ? ( i installed a new one)

Ok i found the culprit..
It was a time ago when i made a GM template in Synfire and could not remember the procedure again.
Synfire makes it not easy (userunfriendly) and helpes me not to find it ..so it should be better if the options for "Create new device description" are direct visible.
So to create a new device description must show all 3 choices directly and not hidden in the menu:
- fixed channels
- 1-channel with multiple programs
- 16- channel Multi -timbral
I was using (used of ) : extract device description from plugin.. wrong.. there is a dedicated device description for General MIdi, but it was hidden in the menu
So i ask to fix this, that show the 3 device descriptons in the main menu right away.

I started over again , because last week i got a serious malware virus on windows 7 what infected the browser.
Tried to repairing this..it getting worser and unexpected by me the bootmanager was destroyed..could not fix this easily.
So i lost all my synfire settings on the computer..but make a copy of the configuration/user files, but i did not used it(yet).
But still the userunfriendlyness for making a device description in Synfire is a issue ..as it shows up in this situation.

Yes, it is a impossible installation if you are on your own without help and i installed Halion Sonic 2 again and used the Arrangement demo1.cognac demo file for the GM bank in Halion Sonic 2 for testing purposes and it works.
This is how i did this :
- Load Halion Sonic 2 in rack (i used a 64 bit version).
- Go to Audio& Midi setup screen for the racks and tab global rack : choose engine (32 or 64 bit ) and load vsti in rack -> unknown device in red written menu : choose ..create new device description and then 16-channel Multi -timbral .and give this device description (DD) a name ..i did.. New Halion Sonic 64 GM.
- Go to tab global device description-> select the just made device description ( New Halion Sonic 64 GM )
- Go to the tab Programs and go to the option wheel for initialize a General Midi bank.
- Now you have made a GM device description in Synfire, ok save.
- Now i load the New Halion Sonic 64 GM global rack in the arrangement screen and open the Halion Sonic 2 plugin
there. - Now i must prepare the plugin for playing in the GM mode: go to the options in Halion Sonic 2 and choose for Program chance option the value : GM mode--> 16 midi channels are loaded now in Halion Sonic 2.
- Open the demo arrangement in Synfire : arrangement demo 1.cognac. Assign the (New Halion Sonic 64 GM) global rack again to this opened demo arrangement.
Now it must be working: i just did it and it is playing correct.
Hope that you can figure this out and Halion Sonic 2 is a serious cheap Vsti ( if buy Halion 5 this is bundled with Halion Sonic 2 ( you get this for free ) for playing GM midi files in Synfire.
