iLok machine license

Posted

Hi,

I understand that some companies now use a an iLok license that doesnt require a physical USB iLok dongle.

http://www.soundsonline.com/Support?sec ... g&article=

I would be really excited if this was possible with SP, as I want to be able to work using my laptop, anywhere.

If iLok were just to make a version like the tiny USB keys that sit flush with ports then that would be fine, but the awkwardness and risk of damage using the huge key as it is now is frustrating.

Andre, is this ever going to be a possibility?

Many thanks

B

Storing the license on the machine isn't as safe as storing it on the key, unfortunately. I wish it was.

The new iLok 2 isn't that huge anymore. Actually it's pretty small. To avoid accidentally losing it, I recommend attaching a lanyard to it.

Ah ok thats a shame, I understand. Yes its not so much about losing it, more that I dont want to break it off with an awkward movement on the train/at the cafe/on sofa. One day iLok will minaturize I'm praying....

cheers

ive got hold of a short usb expansion cable about 15-20cm long. it means the dongle doesnt protude from the side of the laptop and i velcro it to the back of the laptop screen when in use. Saves any chance of it being snapped off as its out of the way.

Yeah, Joint adapter is a *must*.

I would also highly recommend subscribing to Iloks  "Zero-Downtime" Coverage Service.

It covers your Ilok against accidents, loss and now also includes coverage against theft (!!)

Its 30$ a year, which really is nothing for peace of mind, especially when you might have it with you on the road when travelling...

See details here: https://www.ilok.com/#!zdt-coverage

Best,

tL.

I'm going to resurrect this thread and repeat the OP's question about allowing ilok to store the license on the machine.

Really frustrated that I cracked and shorted my laptop today because of that stupid ilok thing sticking out like a sore thumb. Next I had to argue with my wife about a new laptop. That was worst!

Eventide, East West and iZotope allow storage of the license on the machine. East West's Play generation of its instruments have not been cracked.

Unfortunately the only software package I actually need on my laptop besides Kontakt is Synfire, since the rest is for the workstation.

If I damage my next laptop, (that I just ordered), and that costs way more than Synfire, with that damn ilok dongle, I'll sell my Synfire license and go back to Guitar Pro, lol.

Bad day? Ayup.

Grrr.

After months of going back and forth to Synfire, dabbling and learning, things are finally clicking. Then this happened.

Wonderful product guys. Truly a marvel.

I use a short 6 inch usb extention cable for my ilok. It means it doesnt physically sick out but is free to move around a bit. Might be worth investing in one until things change with synfire's support for software iloks. Sorry realise I'd suggested one of these when this topic first appeared.

My ilok gen 3 key that isn't even a year old died and had to be RMA'd.  Can't use Synfire for 14 days and it cost me 50$USD.

That's two major issues with the ilok dongle in just a few months.

How does one go about selling and transferring my Synfire license? Hardware dongles are obviously not favored by the industry, and I can see why. Despite the simplicity of carrying licenses with you, it is still a clearly cheap device that is prone to failure and ties up a precious port on a laptop.

Unless the next version of Synfire dispenses with this hardware ilok nonsense, I'm out. I'm a fan of Cognitone and believe in Synfire despite the frankly numerous bugs.

I would have enjoyed witnessing the evolution of this product, but, hardware dongles aren't gonna cut it.

Steinberg's market share is shrinking fast. Perhaps due in part to their prices compared to Reaper or an unatural number of Apple fanboys stuck in apple land, but perhaps also due to the e-licenser tying up a port, when the competition has no such legacy notion.

If v2.0 of Synfire takes care of the stability bugs and dispenses with hardware ilok, i'll stay, otherwise i'll have a fire sale with my pro license.

The latest version of Orb Composer also cost me a pretty penny. It is far from as capable as Synfire, but Hexachords isn't forcing hardware dongles on us. I'm certain Hexachords is as worried about piracy as anybody else.

it is what it is.  I have to have an ilok, a steinberg stick, and a memory stick plugged in order to have licenses for all my plugins. It's dangling out the side of my laptop on a hub, which itself needs a usb-c to usb-b adapter, then an external hard drive to hold my samples, and we haven't even gotten into sound cards and midi interfaces needed to make the rest of my shit work.  Given all that, I don't mind the ilok because I have to have it anyway. It sort of comes with the territory for buying plugins, daws, etc.

I have HN2 adv. Haven't used it for many years. Nevertheless I was tempted to update until I read about the requirements for the iLok dongle. I have an iLok3. It was fine when I used a non-portable big DAW- computer. But since I switched to a Macbook Pro M1, I compose and mix in many different places, and all my software requiring iLok now works with machine or cloud authorization. Let me know when Synfire will offer this option too. I am not going to have an iLok3 sticking out from my Macbook just for the sake of Synfire.

Hi,

I totally agree. I've bought Synfire 2 hoping to store the iLok information locally on my M1 which only has usb-c. I got disappointed. I mean, I don't carry any dongle (plus cable) with me, not even to the kitchen.

So many other companies switched in the meantime.

Hopefully,
