Two crash types on OSX 10.14.5

Posted

Synfire (latest Version) will crash:

- as soon as i access the top menu of the app (Apple, Synfire, Edit..)
This doesnt happen always, but very often, an it happens as soon as the app is loaded

- when i try to import a midi file, browsing in the OSX file dialog will immediately freeze the app (coloured ball is spinning)

Thanks for reporting.

I could not reproduce this yet (using Synfire all day on 10.14.6 beta), but it is likely that the next update will fix it, since we improved some details how the UI interfaces with macOS.

If you know a way to repoduce it reliably, we could verify whether the fix is successful.

A new update is online now that includes a lot of performance and stability improvements how the UI is handled on macOS. While we couldn't reproduce this issue, we believe (hope) the overall improvements might fix it.

Thanks Andre. Unfortunately, the problem is still there.
Crashes on Midi-Import (as soon as the file-dialog is open).
After installing i had three crashes when clicking in the osx menü bar.

Too bad. I really wonder how this is possible. I'm on the same macOS and never see this.

Do you use any non-standard system utilties or enhancements?

Thats really hard to answer, but as far as i know, its a pretty normal osx installation...
btw: whats your roadmap with synfire? whats copming next?

On the road map is a simplification of the creation of phrases, including generative features for melodies and harmony. Assembling an arrangement from phrases is child's play and fun, but harvesting and collecting phrases is what takes a lot of preparation time currently, so we want to make that easier. I'll post a bit on that topic later.

There's a new build online now that attempts to make the Mac menu more robust in a wider range of situations. Let us know if it improved anything on your Mac (actually I always thought the good things with Macs is that, unlike generic PCs, they behave all the same ... doesn't seem to be the case).

Thanks Andre for the information. But it's still the same behaviour. First click in the OSX top menu und Synfire is gone in a sec.

Weird. Never experienced this on any Mac we have. What's your hardware?

How does browsing files in the open dialog work now?

I use a 2018 Macbook Pro.
browsing in the OSX top menu immediately crashes Synfire. Navigating in Synfires own menue for e.g. importing midi works, but as soon as the OSX file dialog pops up, the app hangs.

Apple's developmennt tools don't complain about any multi-threading issues at all, so I suspect this is dependent on hardware. We don't have a 2018 MacBook Pro at hand unfortunately. Can you contact us at support at cognitone dot com, so we can iron this out together?

A note to other readers:

This has been fixed with the new 1.10.3 update that is online now.
