I get the following message starting Synfire 2 if the external audio interface is not running.
"The Audio Engine does not start or is unable to connect to Synfire Pro. Please check if you have a firewall that blocks local connections to 127.0.0.1 on port 8822, or if there are othe instances of Synfire Pro running on your LAN. Open the user interface of the Engine and set the workstation IP address to 127.0.0.1. Quit and reinstall the Audio Engine manually if the problem persists. Click OK to retry."
This didn't happen before I upgraded to Synfire 2. I am unsure how to follow these instructions on my Mac (running OS Ventura). If I click ok on the Synfire pop-up warning (several times), Synfire eventually opens, but preferences for audio input gives me a frozen blank screen (which strangely pulses) and I cannot change anything. Eventually, I have to force quit. If I start my audio interface prior to launching Synfire, the Engine works normally. Not sure what to do....
I have had other issues since installing the update (perhaps this needs a separate topic). The update did not uninstall Synfire 1, which I then did with its installer, then reinstalled Synfire 2. Now I don't seem to be able to save any changes to my projects. I can't even find a projects folder, even in the folder that has the configurations file, as was suggested in another post. Do I need to create a Projects folder somewhere? I still have all my projects and library files, thank goodness, but locations seem messed up.. My synfire files are all in my User/Shared/Documents/Synfire. The config files, however are in my home folder documents.
Anyway, I am very confused by all this and any suggestions or help very welcome.

The error message would also popup when if engine isn't running. Find the engine icon on the dock to check. Ignore the IP address hint, which is only relevant if you run multiple engines in your LAN.
It is likely that the engine crashes when your audio interface is not turned on and then Synfire can't find it. I don't know why it crashes. Need to see the Apple crash report of the engine (please don't post here, send to support at cognitone com).
The upgrade doesn't delete any user files. It merely renames a few folders from "Synfire Pro" to "Synfire" (all editions now use the same folder structure to simplify upgrades). It should also have removed the Synfire version 1 application. Possibly Ventura once again tightened security restrictions that no longer allow this. Will have to double check.

That's not a good idea. This folder is replaced at least partially with every update. Your projects folder should be somewhere under your home folder or on another volume.
Move your projects to a safe location and use "Preferences" to set the current projects folder. That should fix a couple things.

Thank you Andre. I won't bother you troubleshooting my audio setup. My problem is likely caused by my audio interface driver (2017 Focusrite Clarett). There is no update for Ventura yet, and it has been giving me other problems for some time with the IAC driver as well.
And thanks for the suggestion to move my projects to another location. I will do that.
