Articulation Key switch preparation

Posted

EDIT my mistake on the first part. I didn't see the latency control in the articulation manager. I set all of the articulations to 10 and it works just fine.

The normal issue is still there but its just an eyesore not a functional issue. Perhaps renaming it "unaltered" would make more sense.

Hi,

The articulations I have set up for Synful Orchestra using keyswitches always fire too late, allpying the wrong articulation the first note of a segment.

Is there a way to set the keyswitch so it fires a few fractions of second earlier to give the software time to prepare? (In cubase I would always have to set key switches a bit early in a number of synths)

Also... is there a way to get rid of the default normal articulation (or replace it with a more meaningful normal). As it exists it does nothing to change the articulation back to normal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Casey

Hi Casey,

you can replace or edit the "Default" KS definition as you see fit. You can even delete it. Its purpose is to reset the current articulation immediately before a new segment occurs that has no articulation assigned (hence the name "Default").

EDIT: Yuk today isn't my day. I found the problem, there is an active button on the input transform I didn't press.

Where can i change that definition? I don't see anything like that in the articulation manager.

Also, more urgently, I think synfire is sending midi notes and program changes to all channels in nuendo.

In Nuendo/Cubase I have Local Input Transformers set to filter each channel, but when I change an instrument, all of the channels change to the same instrument. Notes are also routed through Synfire to All channels (as far as I can tell).

Is there a setting Im missing?

Erm ... I don't think I fully understand what you mean. Just in case I guessed right:

First off, be sure you set fixed channels for sounds that you don't want to dynamically pick any of the currently available channels (which only makes sense for synths that can switchs sounds by program change messages).

Then check the "Midi Through" state: Some output might return from Cubase/Nuendo back to Synfire and get routed to the currently selected instrument.

Synfire sends default controller values to each instrument before a playback starts. IIRC, this also includes a program change message. These messages however, should be distinct for each respective sound. They should not all receive the same messages.

Hey Tokyo Rose,

What do you think of Synful Orchestra?

I was just checking it out and the demos sound good (but they always do!) I was interested as it's seems to be mainly synthesis based.

BFD, East West Platinum, Omnisphere and various others are killing my machine right now so I was looking at ways of freeing up ram.

Your thoughts as a user would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Well, first I figured out it was just some settings in Nuendo everything is working fine now.

I think synful is great, though it does need a constant expression controller (breath controller, knob etc) to really take advantage of what it does.

The new horn sounds fantastic, better than WIVI's, and new strings are next in line for an update. The trumpets and trombones are the only real exceptions to the library, both of which are just unusable at the moment, though I know updates are planned and if they are anything like the new horn they should blow everything else out of the water.

I now have synfire set up so that all of the channels are dynamic and all of the articulations (arco, pizzicato, bartok-pizz, col-legno, tremolo, harmonics, sul-ponticello, sul-ponticello-tremolo) are mapped in. There is no loading time for any instruments so it is very fast to swap out any instruments.

One of the main advantages for its use in synfire is that instead of searching through a library of articulations to find what you need you compose the articulations through expression controls, note attacks etc, so that they become part of the composition.

Also, there is no reverb built in so all the hall settings are effecting are the first four early reflections. Just loading the demo and playing is going to sound a little raw, and for some of the older instruments a bit synthy.

Hey thanks for the heads up.

Yes, yes, you hit the nail on the nead a few times there,

not having to search for articulations,

quick loading times etc. .

Expression controller is fine, I presume a mod wheel map or mapping into Kore would be fine.

I am going to check out the demo this weekend.

Thanks!
