I've read thru the questions here and done a little research. Problem is Logic's virtual instruments (which you need to input the drone) does not have a midi output.
Has anyone found a way around this?,,,, Just catching up with 1.51 and drones will keep reading more posts here.

They work with Logic if you use AudioUnit format virtual instruments. The proprietary instruments that ship with Logic do not work. You can not load them in the drones and AudioUnits don't support midi output, so you could not forward midi to them. And Logic can not host VST.

Iam also interesting to can use "Exs-24" by a drone. I understand the problem, and i got a tip from andre at past to use the normal midi driver (iac) ... or so ... but i want not diferent timings, if this it possible.
Hm ... give me please tips - if there are "news" about this.
Or - is there another au-Instrument wich can host "apple internal au" ?

I'm still stuck on this one, I can patch a drone into a AU Virtual instruemt but there is not MIDI output. Logic assumes the Virtual instrument is assigned in slot of module.. I did try patching the out of AU VI to a direct MIDI input (how Tyros 4). That worked.
However I'm assuming SFP want to see the available midi track and manipulate in it'w own domain, much like Melodyne does. While working with pitch corrections and harmonies, it is not directly playing the midi data from the sequencer, it copies it and uses that to manipulate.. When you're through you can either render or mix down directly, ''
Does SFP work on a similar idea, I will have to explore it. If someone has a clear expllanation, I would love to hear, it. Cause on the surface AU cannot output MIDI.

My point is that melodyne takes the audio from Logic track. and instead plays the modified Melodyne audio track from within Melodyne, rather than Logic, so the two tracks can be different. When you are satisfied with Melodyne, you export the finished audio, and put on a seperate track, or replace the original audio track.
My question does the drone do the same thing? Does the drone take the original Midi track, and then manipulate it, and then later paste it over Logic's original MIDI track? Can I go back/forth from original and SFP modified MIDI?. Can I do it in sections, or does it do the whole track only?
I use external MIDI hardware, thus I can't use an audio plugin instrument. I've been experimenting with IAC's but having inconsistent results so far. Are two programs lock synced together. If I start either application, shouldn't the the other applications show the transport moving.
Is there a section of this website which gives a complete oversight? I'm really kind of overwhelmed by this..

The drone does not modify existing midi stored on the DAW. It plays the midi generated by Synfire in sync with other Logic output. You can export it with drag & drop to Logic once you are satisfied with the result.
Moving midi data back and forth between DAW and Synfire is a very laborious workflow (not recommended). Cognitone will rather improve the phrase editor so you can more easily accomplish all editing in Synfire and use the DAW for playback and mixing only.

A lot of my work uses external hardware, So you have to use a Logic MIDI input, wich of course has not input to insert a drone.
I can however I believe, create an audio unit instance and then patch that independently to a midi only device (Tyros 4, Motif XS)
So the Drones are playing SPF material, that stays in sync with any audio/midi I have in Logic. When I am satisied with Drone output, do I export it, and then import it to a MIDI input of Logic?

Just drag & drop the drone's MIDI content to the Logic track. You may need to press the Export button first. Open the drone and grab its colored index box. Be careful to place the file correctly on the Logic midi track.

I know Melodyne only works with audio, although you can extract audio as midi to drive instruements to folllow the vocal..
What i meant is Melodyne on first pass reads all the audio data, processes that and then manipulates it. So when you play Logic you can have the melodyne channel patched in (with corrections and changes you've made) or patched out (audio is coming directly from Logic with no melodyne processing.
Does SFP need a chord reference track or several of the tracks to figure out what the chords and harmonies are going to be? Can you A/B it from raw Logic to SFP. Do you just export the SFP data and import back into Logic for mixdown?

The drones can not access Logic's (or any DAWs) midi data directly. A drone sees midi during playback only, which limits the way it can process it.

Yes. The harmony progression is a complex object configured according to some AI and user decisions. It lives and works only inside Synfire. Synfire does not process any of the midi midi from Logic during playback. It uses the drones for output only.

To some extent, yes, by using the "Local" switch on each drone. Local playback mode does play Logic midi data only. Non-local playback merges both sources, Synfire and Logic. Now that I think about it, it would make much sense to add a "Synfire" option to that switch, which would play Synfire output only ... then you have a real A/B switch.
There are certainly future possibilities as to how a drone could merge/switch/process DAW midi data more intelligently. This is on our radar.

Thank you for bearing with me and answering my questions... I guess I'm getting holder, I used to be quite intuitive about hardware and software. Loved those 400+ page manuals.. Now I just want to plug it in and do as I want.. (ADD from too much TV, like the whole rest of America)//
Thanx again, I have the opportunity to experiment with SFP now, so want to expand the way I've been working..
