Connecting HN with VSTi's

Posted

I created a video that demonstrates how to connect Harmony Navigator with VST instruments, since some users reported that they have problems with that. I think that it's actually quite simple.

In the video I do the following steps:

1. Import  MIDI file and play it with the Windows GM Synth.

2. Connect the instruments to a VSTi (HALION Sonic), which is hosted at Cubase.

3.  Reconnect one of the instruments at HN to a second VSTi, also hosted at Cubase.

The connection between HN and Cubase is done via the MIDI loopback driver loopbe30, which comes with HN2 advanced.

if i want make  songs with all the time chancing sounds per song, than assigning sounds with a device setup is more labour-intensive and not intuitive.

This also for not Gm sounds too, because there are a lot VSTi plugin who this not supporting.

I hoped, that I could demonstrate with the video, that the sound setup at HN is not that complicated (no "rocket science"  ;) )

I do use VSti not General too MIdi and also multitimbral in HN2

In the video I used two VSTi's simultaneously, the Halion Sonic and the Aria player for the Garritan Sounds. Both are multitimbral. The Halion Sonic was used in General MIDI mode and the Aria player was used in direct MIDI channel mode. In the video I have loaded only one sound into the Aria player (the violins), but it's the same principle with multiple sounds. All I would need to do is to expand the device description that I named "test" in the video. If necessary, I could create an additional video.

Thanks for the tutorial juergen .. i learned something from it that importing a midi or phrase in  import dialog screen  also gives the opportunity ( the need) to assign sounds.

It is not rocket science, but it is a trial and error affair for the user to find out how it exactly works , because HN2 is updated and the soundsystem is chanced too with names.
No it are not coupled differential equations yet ;)

I do want to use sounds not general midi on a per song basis in a direct midi channel mode ( the old versions of HN2 could this : direct adressing).
If you want you can make a new video what covers all possible workflows.. for on a per song basis soundsassigning(direct adressing) or with a device setup (template)for using for more than one songs.

Direct MIDI channel mode is still available with the new version of HN. I attached a picture with the appropriate settings.

Hint: When using direct MIDI channel mode I recommend to create separate device descriptions for each project (and give them the same name like the project name), even if you use the same sound modules at the projects. This way you have stored the MIDI channel assignments on a per project basis in the device descriptions and can then easily restore the channel assignment for a particular project, if necessary.

Thank you Juergen for taking the time to make a video. This is much appreciated and very helpful.

@janamdo: the old versions of HN2 could this: direct adressing

It is still there, just no longer called "direct addressing". Select the MIDI instrument type, pick the desired port and channel, and that's it.

The user manual does not specifically explain these three steps, because almost every DAW works the same way. The only difference is that you need to assign a category and check if the playing ranges work for your sound.

Well it seems a make progress to connect HN2 with Kontakt..phh
Using kontakt 5 in Mulab as internal soundmodule..this routing is now clear

Now i must try to connect the midi channels in Mulab with the midi channels in HN2 and hopefully i can use the internalrouting in MUlab and Kontakt as basis ( see videotut ).

Finally i got HN2 working in MUlab and the 8 tracks are to be seen as racks in Mulab with kontakt 5 16 out
Kontakt 5 16 out means 8 stereo midi channels and that are also the number instruments in HN2
I hope That Cognitone will be generous to make HN2 a 16 channel instrument, but i daud that because it seems that HN2 is not fully supported to make this product for the mass.

For people who are interested in Modular sounddesign you can look to MULAB(great functionality and uses)..see video where a Kontakt5 VSti multi is connected with HN2, but with HN2 you can also use the midichannels and connect to the internal sounds/effects of Mulab and use these with HN2..awesome

The manual of HN2 is not explaining how it exactly works i don't know what is in the mind of the developers of

HN2 , because they seems to reluctant to explain the right soundsetup
Despite my attempts to make them clear that this information should be included in the manual they refuse to do their work proper.

As customer like me seems to be not seriously taken by them..well it is not my product or maybe they don't take HN2 seriously and are focused on SFP.

Perhaps they think that people will choose for SFP if they encounter the trouble with HN2?..haha
