Dynamics Parameter

Posted

In the Instrument setup, along with Articulation and Controllers, it would be great if there was a Dynamics panel.

It would be a simple table.

The first column would be a list of all of the controllers that effect loudness (vel, cc02, cc11, cc7 and any others that a particular synth might use). These would be added by the user.

The second column would be a percentage control as to how much a single dynamics parameter effects each. This would be set bu preference and ear.

A third column would give a few dynamic curve and inverse choices.

This way the loudness of any instrument can be controlled with a single parameter, while giving preference to dynamic controls that emulate the physical properties of an instrument. For example: For most piano sample libraries it would make sense to give all dynamic control to velocity and none to cc7. Many orchestral sounds require both velocity and cc2 and would require a mix of the two (set in column 2). Often sythns use only cc7 and have no velocity control.

In addition to improving phrase re-usability, this would speed up the process of lowering overall dynamic of a composition as parts build up.

If the dynamic parameter of each instrument was able to be frozen as a menu function (applying the scaling permanently to each of the individual parameter assigned to it) and then reset the dynamics parameter to a flat state that would even be better.

This would be very nice in an orchestral arrangement with 40 something instruments and 80 or 120 volume parameters... A single dynamic parameter inherited from the container to scale all at once and then apply that to the original parameters would save hours of work.
