Sounds a bit like cheating. :-)
But would be useful if you want a quick and dirty progression to use while testing other parameters out, and are getting tired of using the built-in templates.

I'm afraid there is no such thing like a generic random progression. At least none that would make sense musically. This heavily depends on musical style and the phrases you want to use with it.
Random chords just don't work and progressions derived from a scheme or grammar get boring quickly, because the human ear recognized the "scheme" instantly.
One could perhaps collect hundreds of examples from known songs and compositions and have Synfire pick one of them by chance. Sort of a huge library.
The best way to get working progressions is to learn from examples and do them on your own with the palettes. So, providing more examples is definitely a good thing.
In any case, a random progression generator would be a very sophisticated thing with lots of knobs and sliders. We might consider this for later releases.

Yes, that is a good idea, in fact that would be much better than a random progression generator. It would serve the purpose well (rapid quick-and-dirty prototyping), without having Synfire automatically compose for you.
(And I definitely am of the mindset that one-click automatic composition type operations should remain outside the scope of Synfire. That would take most of the fun out of using it. 8) )
