Halion VSti can this be used by HN2 ..standalone?

Posted

I am asking myself if it possible to use the Halion VSti as a standalone soundmodule for HN2
Or is it necesary to use Cubase together with Halion and HN2

You can connect a standalone virtual instrument directly with HN with your MIDI loopback driver. No DAW is needed for this connection.

I try to connect HN2 now with the standalone version ,but a second sound in a shared rack setup i can not connect.?

But in Halion 4 without HN2 it is not working Midichannel 2 ?

The easiest way to connect HN and Halion is to make the appropriate settings directly at the instrument inspector of HN (i.e. without creating a special device description). Choose "Private MIDI" at the instrument inspector, connect the instruments to the "1.Internal MIDI" port, choose different MIDI channels for each instrument and set the correct instrument categories (see attached picture). Make sure that your  instrument patches at Halion have also the correct MIDI channel assignments. The attached picture shows the settings at Halion Sonic (standalone version) but it should be similar at Halion 4.

Thanks!

Yes this is the easiest way to connect all  directly for the 8 instruments..the global instrument do have a shared device setup for microsoft GS Wavetable synth ( handy is that you can choose a device setup made via a shared rack device setup for the global instruments)
Probably is also for a song possible to chance directly the global setup sounds

So this is the "direct soundassigning"

The "indirect soundassigning" goes with a shared device setup ..and this is handy because you can use this for more than one song and first you make the decive description and  after that you assign the sounds in the instrument tab in HN2

Also handy to know is the save rack&setup option, because you can start from there over again

Tricky is that is you were working on a device setup and try out later the direct Midi soundassigning ( by ignorance) for global instruments or other instruments..that the  Midi port in  the midi tab get's multiple device descriptions

There can only be one device description for a midi port
This could be improved by making this more userfriendly and give a error for this
Now you must remove the multiple device description by removing a device description what has recorded all your device setups
This is what i have encountered and with the automatic installer in SFP is it much easier ?
Complicated that soundassigning system (for me) in HN2and it takes a long time before you understand it as it works.

Finally get Halion 4 ( amazing soundmodule)  working with HN2 with all possible setups i want ( direct Midichannel (for one song basis) or shared device description( more than one song) and can now focus on music more.
Not easy to perform forme at the begin for me and it took ages ;)  and there is room for improvement : do not mix shared device setup with a direct midi channel setup for a song..you get multiple device assigment
A error message should be better if you try to make those setups in a song

Finally i can listen to the given laibrary to me from soundcase !

Still in trouble with the soundsassigning in HN2 and Halion 4
For all the trouble with the soundassigning in HN2 a  deserve a statue :)
In Halion Sonic + SE there is a GM mode and the device decription for GM works there
But the flagship of Steinberg Halion4 is not be able to read the device description for GM, because Halion has no GM mode

Ok, than write a own device description for Halion for GM..that means using the default Gm device description in HN2 and assign the GM sounds from Halion4 to it  and save it ..

Is this possible?.. but i don't have the knowledge to make a device setup for H4 GM sounds
I was using Halion Sonic + Se and both do have a GM mode and aspecting this also for Halion 4 but it has it not, ..that is really disappointing
Halion 4 can recieve MIdi Program changes, but how to connect HN2 with Halion 4 ?
