How to setup a transient GM (general midi) drone in Cubase 7.5

Posted

Has someone experience with this how to setup ?
Must i use 16 midi transient midi drones for a multitimbral GM (general midi) Vsti in Cubase16 or can i use one Transient Midi drone for a multitimbral GM Vsti in Cubase?
I noticed that the 32 bit midi drone has 16 midi input/output, but 64 bit transient midi drone has 4 midi input/output.

In Synfire itself with the audioengine it  is easy to use a multitimbral GM Vsti, but in Cubase 7.5 now a transient drone its become complicated.

It's easy.  Just add a transient GM DD (the same way you set up an engine DD, but tick the MIDI box).  Then in Cubase add a Cognitone Drone, add the drone to Synfire (from the DAW4 tab).  In Cubase assign Halion Sonic (or whatever) and in the Options make it a GM instrument.

Finally add 16 tracks to Cubase and use the input transformer to filter out 1,2,3, etc.

Done!

Easy .. i like that
I try it now with HALion5 and don't use a existing GM DD from Halion Sonic 2 for HAlion5 , but make a own DD from scratch for HALion5.
Lets look how this works out ..

No it is not easy.. i try to play the demo arrangement from Synfire in Cubase 7.5, but somehow something went wrong.
So it is not done yet.
What could be went wrong Pete..do you have a idea ?
Please explain exactly your steps how you setup the GM midi drone in Cubase 7.5.
Most easy should be a video from you to get this GM transient drone working in Cubase 7.5

Yes boss, a GIF is attached!

On reflection, it may have been easier to set the Halion Instrument track to 'Any' before adding the 15 MIDI tracks.  I've only just got 7.5 and didn't realise it was going to do that.  You'll see what I mean when you get to that point.

Pete ..very helpful the animated gif!
:) After seeing this.. i realized i forget to set two GM option in HAlion5 ( you can also intialize the GM mode in HAlion5 and then the slots are filled with 16 GM programs)

I must try this out again further.. to be continued..

Ah yes, you must do that as well.  I'm not sure how to do that in Halion 5.  I use SE for GM as they're the same sounds but I thought SE would use less resources.

It seems that in HALion5 is no GM mode option, but i must select multi programs (sounds)  in HALion 5 by initializing:  "general midi multi" and then  two options: program changes allowing and a other one.
For resources i don't know..but HALion5 offers more, but is more userunfriendly then Halion Sonic and Halion Sonic 2 is included as you buy HALion5 !
For setup testing is Halion Sonic 2 more suitable

Very informative your animated gif and it went wrong for me on different places in my setup

- forget options GM in Halion
- forget to switch on the module for input transformer  channel pass
- midi channel on number or any ?
- i swicthed on the monitor option to allow the drone to receive midi data (like in the wiki video of Juergen

midi channel on number or any ?

Mine are set to Any and it works.  It may also work with numbered but I haven't tried.

i swicthed on the monitor option

Yes sorry, I forgot that bit.  Was in a bit of a rush at the time!

Yes, finally there is multi-timbral Vsti in Cubase 7.5!! .. the demo arrangement sounds normal good now.
- It seems that there is not a midi time problem when i record one track.
- Problem is the default library ..when selecting a phrase there is no sound to listen( has this to do that the audio engine of synfire is not used ? ) this is a serious problem for listening to phrases in Cubase .

It seems that any midi channel is correct, but there is no default library to choose:  still handicapted in windows 7
Is there a fix for this in Synfire ..to play the phrases in a library for a transient GM drone in Cubase ?

The libraries play fine for me.  If you're not hearing anything, just right-click the phrase and choose Assign Instrument.

But must you assign a instrument for every phrase in the library ?
When Synfire is used with the audioengine.. it assigns the GM bank to the library..but now in Cubase 7.5 there is no audio engine in Synfire used.

I use then the embedded library where i have added the default Synfire library and the  default library where default synfre library is also included

I am really curious how you did that this option in Synfire, to set the GM transient drone by default ?

Seems to hidden somewhere .. library use as global instrument  ?

A another issue is that when playing one midi track in Synfire there (seems) are two midi channels involved in Cubase 7.5
e.g : there is one midi instrument playing on midi3 and this instrument is to see (volume bar) in Cubase and HAlion 5 slot, but a track above in midi 2 gives also the same volume bar as midi3 , but there is no instrument loaded in Halion 5 slot ?

I didn't do anything so I don't know.  Maybe you changed them at some point, no idea.

but a track above in midi 2 gives also the same volume bar as midi3

Probably you haven't got your Input Transformers set correctly.  They must be set from 1 to 16 against each MIDI track.

Ah yes forget to put on the midi input transformer, ( i looked only for the channel and this was ok )

you need to get the soundcloud song id from the embedded code you get from the soundcloud page, somewhere in the embedded code there is something like =4567321  thats the number you want. Then in this forum put (https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/track…

ok that didnt work... the forum took it as a soundcloud link... lol you need open square bracket, the word soundcloud, a space, the number from the embedded code, and a closing square bracket.

Looks like youve cracked your technical problems with transient drones and halion. quite a sweet sounding string sound.
