Keep Track names

Posted

When importing midi tracks whether a whole song or just one file, SFP should keep same name on import and when you export it, it should keep same name also.

I't just about imposiible to import, tweak and export SFP tracks  and place them in their oringinal tracks in Logic, what with MIDI track being rechannalized and the name changed.  It's quite a pain..  You need to realize that a program of this scope is going to be used in different ways by different people. Inelegent or not you are going to follow some of the DAW/MIDI conventtions that have been utilized for the last 30 years.

Notice my jpg here.  I started with Logic song. l  cleaned up midi, rechannelizine all notes in all tracks to be correct, Cut of any proram changes other than first one, chopped of ocave 6 -7 articulation mega notes.

Exporting that into SFP is pretty decent. It sounds very close to Logic, sometimes voices get changed. But SFO  won't let me import with Tyros Direct device, all I get is 'null' patch for every instrument, and no apparent way to reset it.

I have to use dynamic - that's part of the problem... I would really like to see some indication of what midi channel a SFP track is being played on.  It's far easier to tweak volumes, pans etc, then go thru Arranger page track by track adjusting sliders.

I manipulated SFP tracks to likeing saved and exported it. On Logic picture, the first tracks measure s1- 129 is original Logic track. Measure 135 - 400 is the SFP MIDI export.  As you can see there are a lot of overlapping midi files, from all over the place on different midi channels, it's like something in SFP got scrambled.  Also note that three tracks are over 3200 bars long.  This bug has been here since i first got SFP. i just chop of the the whole end, They are just one big long note.

Also when importing into SFP. I will go thru thousands of notes with no end,  I know some synths don't put a note off  command, just the note on and duration.   It would be nice if SFP took this into consideration, not sure if it's causing other problems.

Also channels outported from SFP are  rechannalized and named wrong.  To make this powerful software popular you are going to have follow some normal DAW conventions, otherwise too many people will give up in frustration.

I don't know where SFP fits into the DAW scenario. I do want to be able to hit Logic or SFP and hear same channels playing right patches.  But I still kind of seem them as two seperate entities,  it seems like there is always going to be problems syncing two programs so tightly without slopiness.  Then again I can't get drones to work.  I really need to see a well explained, with lots of drawings and photos. to follow you.  You often give an answer to someone, but forget to telll us exactly what menu, pulldown, mutltiple choice option it is..  A quarter of the time, I can't follow the manual because you assume we know it as well as you do.

Perhaps it would be simpler if  SFP was capable of reading a stereo augio track along with midi files and not go thru all the craziness, of drones, rewire.  i've always had horrible luck wit rewire, and gave up on using programs that utilized.  it was always too sluggish an sloppy.

I still love this program, but sometimes don't have the time to use it in a project cause there are just too many componants, that are not explained or given photos of, so we can duplicate your results, I can't be charging a client while I reading thru manual, tryng this and that to get desired results.

Again there is no easy fix here because of the complexity and uncharted territory of software...

(PS).. I am so totally in love with the  step command .

Humbly appologetic..

PS - I did the SFP export, and it came into Logic ok without all the extrainous  sequences, which didn't belong.  However it does always export 1 - 3 tracks that are 2000 - 3000 measures long  (definitely some kind of bug)

Added this to the list, thanks. Can not agree more.

Also note that three tracks are over 3200 bars long.

It would be helpful to email an original Logic midi export file to Andre (support at cognitone dot com). One that has not been processed by Synfire yet. I remember he was working at this topic many times and is certainly interested in learnign why it still doesn't work for some files.

Then again I can't get drones to work.

Drones are best for plugins. Setting them up for external synths is a little backwards, although it can be done (not with Logic unfortunately, because AU does not support midi out).

Yes, please send me a midi file. These import artifacts are a real PITA.
