Lightweight Orchestral VSTi ?

Posted

Anyone knows about (or even uses)  a VSTi which covers all types of classical orchestral instruments AND which does not consist of tons of GigaBytes of samples (and which is not that expensive) ?

Over 10 years ago I was heavily using the Edirol Orchestra which is  (no: which was...) such a lightweight synth. with really acceptable sounds (compared to its overall size of just 80 MB or so).

Just searching for something with low latency and slightly better sounds than the cheap Microsoft internal synth....

I use garitan personal orchestra which still requires 3.5 GB of space. Its relatively cheap at $150, compare to some of the alternatives. I aslo use the ableton live orchestral packs, which are cheaper, but more limited and restricted ti ableton users.

Only issue I have with garritan is the use of the mod wheel for volume rather than velocity on a lot of patches.

Others sound a lot better but cost the earth.

if it does not load all 3.5 GB samples into RAM at start it would be ok.  I ll take a look at it.

Another possibilty just coming to my mind could be Soundfonts. Would be fine if synfire supports them natively. For now you would  need a VSTi which can host a soundfont.

I've found the Native Instruments libraries for Kontakt are good "beginner," libraries, if you have Komplete you already have Session Horns and Strings, and if you have Ultimate there are quite a few more.

I only have Synfire Express, not pro, so I'm not up to speed on connecting Synfire's articulations to a symphonic library, I have a feeling that could make a tremendous difference.

I did Demo East/West Symphonic Pro and it automatically detects legato playing and adjusts the articulations based on that, seemed pretty slick.
