Loading GPO instruments in Synfire- for Windows XP computers

Posted

Hi,

I hope that someone could help me with the following:
I would like to link Synfire with Garritan Personal Orchestra instruments
to get better sounds than the internal GM synth sounds.
Andre’s video tutorial deals with Apple computer and uses IAC Driver to link.
My computer runs on Windows XP Professional.
The printed Manual for Synfire displays different screenshot for ‘Device Description panel’
under Audio & MIDI setup and the instructions do not
seem to apply in my case.
I just now bought Plogue Bidule hoping that it would help me to make the link.
But for want of any Manual/instructions, I have no clue how to go about doing it!

Hi Reg,

on Windwos, please use MIDI YOKE NT, which is roughly equivalent to the Apple IAC driver. On the DVD you find a template configuration for Bidule and instructions how to use it (see: Extras\Windows\Bidule on the DVD and read the ReadMe.rtf). Cognitone will eventually provide their own loopback driver for Windows.

I've attached a GPO device description below. It includes all sounds properly categorized with playing ranges etc (one should be part of the distribution anyway, but this one might be more up to date).

Now do the following:

1) Replace the first 4 plugins in Bidule with "Kontakt Player 2" and load them with the sounds you want to use (e.g. a selection of strings, woodwinds, brass and piano). Depending on RAM, you can load a full orchestra. Save your setup.

2) Replace the midi input devices in Bidule with MIDI YOKE ports (using the context menu).

3) In Synfire, each Kontakt Player instance is represented by a device description. Duplicate the "GPO All Instruments" template for each of the 4 instances and name them "GPO Strings", "GPO Woodwinds" or however you have set them up in Bidule. Be sure to assign them the ports that go to the corresponding MIDI YOKE port.

4) Now go through each device description and assign the sounds you have loaded in each plugin to their respective midi channel. When you are done, purge all unused sounds with Device >> Purge Unused Sounds. This will retain only the sounds you have assigned.

Done.

Once you have created your orchestra in Bidule and setup the devices, you will never have to think about this again.

Hi Christian,

Thank you very much for your immediate response. I am surprised that you have taken the trouble to reply even during the weekend. Cognitone Team is as unique as its softwares!
I shall try the steps you have mentioned to install the instruments.
