Make Sketch greyed out

Posted

Hi,

Juergen pointed out in this threat https://users.cognitone.com/content/make-sketch-greyed-out that the command Container >> Make sketch is greyed out when no Engine is loaded.

According to Andre's answer in the same threat, this behaviour is normal because 'Synfire can't make a Sketch if there is no Engine to host a copy of the arrangement's DAW rack.'.

However, I don't use the Engine at all in my current arrangement, only Midi-drones (and Rewire transport). When I do load the Engine, the option Make Sketch becomes available, but the Engine remains empty.

Can anyone therefore clarify Andre's answer (maybe Andre himself?), as it (to me still) seems pointless that Synfire needs an Engine to create a Sketch when Synfire is merely used as a Midi-sequencer (a very good one, though :-) ).?

Thanks,

Jim

Well, if your arrangement is based on MIDI Drones in a DAW, Synfire can not duplicate those, because that requires manually adding new DAW tracks with new drones, etc.

Sketches work best with sounds hosted on the global rack. These are always shared and need not be duplicated for a new sketch.

Andre,

Thanks for your swift response. I still don't get the reason why Synfire needs an engine loaded in order to make duplicates of the midi drones, as none of these are actually run by the Engine.

Anyway, my workaround now is to just also have the Engine loaded (using ASIO4ALL so it doesn't interfere with my DAW ASIO) and then it works fine. (The engine is continuously empty though, with or without a newly made sketch).

Yildrim,

Thanks for the link, I'll look into it!.
