Not sure why cello part is duplicating itself.

Posted

In this example I created the EL parts first (piano and electric bass). I then hand played some cello instruments in their own container.  See the cellopart jpg.  I then added Acoustic guitar step and pause containers. Likewise for piano..

Lastly I hand played a new bass part linearly, the length of the song..  As you can see from 2nd picture SFP added a new cello part. I've highlighted the Basspart parameter, but you can see from follow parameters, the bass now seems to be coming from several different containers, instead of the last one I recorded..  It is about impossible to keep track of where and why parts are acting like they are...

Cognac 57A is in the raw state as these examples are shown

Cognac 57D is after I exported 5TA, re-imported back into SFP  Used the Take command and the interpertatioin command... more musical at least....

any insights please....

thanx...

I opened your "Empty_Life_57A.cognac" file. Yes, the phrases for the Instrument "Acoustic Bass" in the Container "Bass"  play only up to that point where the container "EL 2" starts. The reason is, that the parameter "Figure" for the Acoustic Bass in the container EL 2 is not empty.

Take a look at the attached image. I have highlighted the container "EL 2" there. Although "Acoustic bass" seems to be empty (if you look at the instrument list), it is actually not. The Figure LED is lit. And since the container "EL 2" starts later than the container "Bass" it takes over at that point (i.e. it overrides the bass figure from the container "Bass").

If you want that the bass is only played by the container "Bass" than you have to delete the bass figure at EL2 (with the delete button) and at all subsequent containers which have bass phrases too (i.e. EL3, Strings 3, EL 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11).

Thanx Juergen... Yes I see that.  But there are no notes in the bass part, even though the 'figure' is highlighted.. This is what threw  me.  Issues like this are  part of what makes SFP hard to use. It is  'un-Mac' like in the sense, that there is very little 'intuitive' design here..  Still

I also thought that a 'child container' overode the parent container.  the point of me doing this was to try a new bass part without destroying the original one, should I want to retrieve it.  My mistake was in deleting the bass notes in the parent container,  instead of deleting on the 'figure' button of those containers. (There is a Mute Container command as well as mute note command on the way I presume).

So does that mean I have to go thru each container and 'delete' any lit parameters that may be present for the bass track'.  So part of my mistake was in not realizing a parameter lit in a parent container would come into effect, if there was no corresponding parameter in the later child container named bass.  It is clear to me now..

One issue down, many more to go (for me at least).

So

Thanx very much..

In this example I have erased all bass 'parameters' for higher up containers,  yet bass still does not play properly...

This program is very frustrating to use.. hence I work with it for a few days, get frustrated and go back to Logic, cause I can execute the same idea much faster in a straight ahead 'Logical' way.

Even though the bass part is highlighted, There is a figure and take  in it.  In the the other containers there are some

bass instrument parameters highlighted. Not even quite sure how I did it.

On a different note, when I re-opened this file.. SFP reassigned all Tyros 4 parts from Port 1 to port 2. (you can only assign all parameters thru sys-ex and CC events) to  Port 2 of Tyros4.  The original design was that Tyros 4 could access an additional 16 tracks, but there are no knobs dedicated to it.  Yamaha's estetic/financial design, yet it makes extra work for users of third party software.  Still the sounds of T4 and it's mixing capabilites, make it desireable to often keep all parts coming from T4..

There is also a bug, which crops up. When I reload a previous project, SFP insists on turning a couple of instruments from MIDI hardware to 'shared rack'.. This bug has been present all along.. I then try to assign it to the proper device (Tyros 4 port 1).  However port 1 is greyed out, until I select port 2 first, and only then can I reassign to port 1)  This bug has been present (or my improper understanding) has been present ever since I started using SFP.

This whole device, (shared, private, midi, ports devices) may be nice for people running only VI libraries.  But is reaks havoc on the guy who's used to using his three MIDI hardware devices. (way overly complicated, and prone to mistakes and mis-understanding).  To oblige us users on a lower rank in the synth food chain.. Let us be able select a port, channel, and define the range.  Direct and to the point..  I'd much rather use my hands and eyes to rectify a problem, then mouse around thru pages and screens of computer software to do something as simple as adjust a filter, or re-select a variation of a certain instrument.  I realize some of my requests are probably beyond the scope of change, cause Andre made certain basic assumptions when he began writing the software code.. Still it is hard and frustrating to some users.

I appreciate the fact that later containers can alter parameters for earlier instruments.  That's part of the power of SFP. Yet it very quickly becomes too 'obtuse' to follow.  I guess I'm too engrossed in trying this and turning on that, now realizing the unseen consequences of what a certain parameter (for a particular) instrument..

I'd like an easy way to see where ALL the parameters are that alter a particular instrument. (not just one at a time) This could be a row of colored dots that show up on arrange page, when invoked.. And of course all colors should be able to be user chosen.  There is a certain percent of people color blind to certain hues..  I personally like to color all my various string parts in Logic with variations of a certain hue.  (variations of the color red etc). Th

I understand now, this is my mistake, (in the sense I didn't understand something).  yet I'm sure many others are going thru similar circumstances.

Do you mean that the bass does not play notes between measure 5 and measure 10? I must admit that it also took me a while to find the reason for that. You have stored a 'Pause' Parameter for the bass in the container "cello 1" (see pic). If you delete that Pause the bass plays properly.
