Problems with reloading rack

Posted

I always save my rack as recommended.  Today I accidentally deleted an instrument so I just thought I would reload my saved rack.

However, I have 3 Halion 4 instances in this rack and upon reload the device description was greyed out for one of them meaning that my arrangement couldn't find some of the instruments.

Further investigation revealed that only 2 of the 3 ports had reloaded so the 3rd port was missing (even though it should have been in my saved rack).

I tried to add it again with the same device description but doing that deleted the greyed-out instruments so I couldn't rememeber what they were.  No matter, I'll just reload the saved rack again.  But now even the saved rack has lost all the instruments!

Unfortunaltely I have now lost all the settings of this 3rd instance of Halion 4, and I had spent a lot of time getting the playing ranges correct for all the instruments.  I have now had to reload the instruments from memory and my arrangement sounds quite different because of the playing ranges.

It makes it very difficult if you cannot guarantee returning to a previously saved configuration.  Surely that is why you should save yout rack?

Hi

I do have also HAlion 4 ..

You do have 3 device descriptions( midi or extracted ), together with 3 output ports and this is bundled in one shared rack and saved... right?

A lot of time for getting the playing ranges correct ?--> is this not be done automatically by Synfire ( this takes a lot of time?)

If you created 3 devices, one for each Halion instance, they should still be there. Devices are saved to the "Devices" folder in your "Config" directory. They are saved separately from the rack.

You may just reconnect this third device to its Halion instance.

Devices are saved only when a rack is saved, the setup window is closed, or Synfire is quit. Right-click on the device in the list and choose "Save", if you want to make sure a newly created device is saved immediately.

What do you mean by "deleted the greyed out instruments" ?

Yes

I sometimes find the automatic playing ranges not accurate, e.g. the lowest notes on a bass guitar are not authentic.  This isn't Synfire's fault as the instrument allows these notes to be played, so I find it better to adjust them myself

But one was missing, I don't know how as I didn't delete it myself.  Maybe to do with the upgrade?

In the Device Descriptions tab, the missing port was listed and greyed out, but when I highlighted 'Instrument' in 'Categories' I could still see all the instrments loaded for that description.

However when I loaded another instance of Halion with the same device description, all these instruments had gone.

Luckily I regularly take a backup of my whole system so I'm going to try and restore the saved rack from a backup taken earlier this week to see if everything is restored.

Problem now solved by reloading from backup the .cogsetup in the Racks folder, the .device in the Devices folder and the .plugpreset in the Plug-In Presets folder.  I had wrongly assumed that saving the Rack also saved all these too.

It still doesn't explain though why one of the ports was missing but at least I now understand why the Device Description was still there.

So how should I have approaced this?  How could I have loaded a new port and alloctaed it to an existing Device Description and Plug-In Preset?

If you have the device description listed in the list(right) in the audio&midi setup screen under the Ports tab, than select  the wanted Plug in preset from the tree and drag this into the shared rack ports list.

Now you get a new node (port name) and drag your device description from the (right) device desciption list onto this node port.

Now there is a output port( node..)  for the loaded device description visible in the device descriptions tab.

I do have the situation with HAlion 4 that i use Midi and not midi Halion 4 sounds altogether in a arrangement, but i use channels and not a shared rack, because it is not possible to make a 1 to 1 sound template for HAlion 4, because the sound categories from synfire are limited

I should like to see that there is extension  for the soundcategories in Synfire like is done in HALion 4
