Hi,
Inside a legacy project (if that matters) loaded into SF3, I do 8m of recording into track mode.
This is the result:
Q1. Why do I see 32m of material (the actually recorded 8m, plus 3 reps)?
Then, if I grab the right edge of the recording to pull it back to shorten it, I get this:
But I had no intention of altering anything but the newly recorded track.
Q2. What is going on here?
Q3. Is there a way to get the result of nothing that was already there to be changed, with the new material just 8m long?

That huge multi-selection (all the blue frames) suggests you have accidentally selected and modified them all. If you are editing a project that was created on the Structure page with nested containers, you need to be sure to only select a single clip with the pointer tool.
Avoid the container selection tool (folder icon, orange frames) unless you really want to modify the container structure. Which is better done in Structure view anyway.
