recording phrases in accomp editor has no count in or metronome, it's very much a hit and miss affair, is there some setting wrong ?
I get 1 metro click then nothing more.

The metronome uses the global default drumkit sound. Be sure you configure this in Audio & MIDI Setup (Settings tab) for a sound that is always available (GM where possible).
The drumkit should also have the same latency as the other sounds you are using.
