Dynamic MIDI Channel Display

Posted

The shared racks dynamic MIDI channel number is not displayed in the instrument panel sound tab, nor as best I can find anywhere else.

Why could not the channel number be displayed underneath the Port drop down menu? The program obviously knows what the value is.

This would be very helpful for routing issues and especially for those of us who want to stream to other harrdware of software via the basic Internal GM Synth.

Yes it would be helpful.. Often when I choose dynamic hardware midi.. all instruments send to the same channel.  So if I solo one instrument 6 instruments solo.. Don't know what I'm doing wrong there.  That's why I go with Static midi channel assignment..  For some MIDI hardware , the effects are hardwired to certain channels.. Dynamic re-assignment suddenly makes your super heavy fuzztone guitar, lose all its balls, cause it reassigned to a channel that doesn't have the proper DSP's  effect assigned.

Having several instruments lose their DSP effects, suddenly make the song sound all wrong.. and it's often difficult to get it back to the correct balance of volumes, DSP effects etc.

Move your mouse over the level metter widget left of the instrument name on the instrument sheet. The MIDI channel is indicated in square brackets on the tool tip that pops up.

Since all dynamic channels may change every time you open or close another arrangement, using this information for manual routing purposes does not make much sense. If you need a specific channel that you want to rely on, better use a static channel instead.

But will the same arrangement retain its assignments upon reopen? That is what is important if I am running a parallel project in my DAW 'linked' to the arrangement.

Anyway, good to know the info is available and how to find it. I already find it on the 'back' end by routing into my DAW on all 16 MIDI channels to tracks set to filter out all but a single midi channel from the port.

I also would add, that I still think it would make sense to display the channel number in the Instrument panel/ Sound tab right under the Port menu.
