Clearer use of preview instrument

Posted

It seems depending on where I import a library from (a wide assortment of places).  I have a lot of issues with previewing the instrument..  Sometimes I select an instrument,  it can play..Other times it won't play in library preview mode.. Only when it is put into the arrangement..

Sometimes I assign instrument in library it plays fine, but when I open the phrase pool, I must again assign the instruement.. It would be nice if there was a clear more foreward way of doing this..

There might be a dropdown menu of already assigned instruemennts from arrangement.  or you create a new instrument to assign..  In the case of hard  ware, one may take  an unused device (port B of Tyros 4)  or else it 'borrows' an already used instrument, outputting a new patch to a particular midi channel, and then returning the proper patch, when you're through auditioning..

I've wondered about this when previewing pre-import: if an instrument has no data until bar 9, does it play 9 silent bars before you hear anything?

I think that is what I found to be the case in HN2 ... but that was a while ago.

Anyway, if it does work like that, it would explain why sometimes you don't hear anything on audition ... the notes might be many measures into the song on that particular track/ instrument.

If the global instruments are assigned to a the GM midi device setup ( VirtualMIDISynth

driver + ntonyx free GM soundfonts) they must always be hearable in the library ?

Yes, the preview will start playing from measure one of phrase... if it starts with silence you will hear silence. If you double ckick it, you'll open a window, and move when the time line starts playing. No this wasn't the case for me, cause I'm watching the timeline go over notes from a phrase pool from library.

Oh....I'm getting a premonition of what you're thinking... Yes it would be nice if SFP  chopped out the silence.  mmmn,

The silence gives me some idea of how the prhrases was used, which isn't a bad thing..  I sometimes use the 'master take' of a library phrase, cause that is the original midi part. Of courese with the chord progression from your song, playing with step, and puase parameters; it very quickly becomes unrecognizeable.

One part of me votes to have SFP cut out the silence, another part of me see's it as valuabe (you can always prune it yourself).
