Figuratively speaking.

Hi ...

I understand that Synfire Pro is the Ferrari, HN2 the Yugo and HN LE  the Vespa ... but I'm having difficulty finding out what I can and cannot do with my Yugo (HN2).

When creating an accompaniment from a MIDI file I am doing all right and I understand how to grab the name of the instrument from the bottom of the instrument channel and drag it into my phrase library to save it for future use.

I do have a couple questions about this: 1). when you have varied the parameters in the instrument track and drag the figure to your phrase library, do the parameter changes come along, or only the basic figure/ phrase? 2). Do you have to select 'snapshot' every time you select a new parameter, or only the first time you try to edit a parameter? I am having a little difficulty fully understanding the 'snapshot' concept.

Two things I'd like to do with a figure: 1). Move it forward or backward in the section in which it is active so that it starts or ends at a different beat or measure in the section; and, 2). play a selection of the figure/ phrase ... as opposed to the entire phrase ... in some sections.

Are these things possible in HN2? I read that you can copy/ cut/ paste, but is this only the whole section or can you do that to a portion selected with the span tool?

Thanks for any help.

I see with the selecting and using the 'Trim' command from the Edit Menu I can change the position start time of the figure and trim it's content. I also discovered the vector stretch and loop command ... so I think I have answered my last two questions.

It does seem that when importing a SMF the CC automation is stripped. Is this the case, or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks.

Hi Prado,

1). when you have varied the parameters in the instrument track and drag the figure to your phrase library, do the parameter changes come along, or only the basic figure/ phrase?

You need to drag the instrument name to save the entire phrase (all parameters). Dragging a parameter saves just that: the parameter data.

2). Do you have to select 'snapshot' every time you select a new parameter, or only the first time you try to edit a parameter?

Only the first time and only if it is grayed out (means: not yet physical). Snapshot inserts a copy of what is stored in the basis sketch (pattern) of the song, so you can modify it. The gray stuff you see is like an alias only.

1). Move it forward or backward in the section in which it is active so that it starts or ends at a different beat or measure in the section; and, 2). play a selection of the figure/ phrase ... as opposed to the entire phrase ... in some sections.

You can copy & paste or clear (even transpose with arrow keys) any portion of a figure using the span tool. This way you can also insert blank space in front of a figure. Copy a measure from somewhere, paste it an the beginning, then clear it.

It does seem that when importing a SMF the CC automation is stripped. Is this the case, or am I doing something wrong?

All CC are stripped that can not be seen or deleted in HN2. Volume, pan, etc. should be preserved.

Thanks Supertonic!

1. For clarity, the manual states, "Figures can be edited with Harmony Navigator to a limited extent (copy, paste, trim, move, record, etc)."

What does 'move' mean in this sentence? I am wishing there was a key command with which I could slide the entire figure left or right within the figure window. Am I missing something, or by 'move' do you just mean through use of select and then copy, cut, paste, clear, etc?

2. Does Synfire Pro permit import of all CC information?

3. Finally (for now!), must all phrases first be imported to an instrument and then dragged to the phrase library, or can a SMF one channel file be imported more directly to the phrase library?
