In my situation use the Vienna ensemble pro server as 1 big sound module.
There is no need to make elaborate device descriptions in Synfire beforehand.
Every time I compile a rack a sound category must be specified for the 16 instruments.
In my situation laborious : 1 by 1
Is it possible to have an option on the global device description (tab) screen to set the sound category to piano ( or another sound) automatically ?
So every time a midi track is added then the sound category is on piano by default.

If you use VEP you might want to create a template device with all sound properties so you can pick one on the last wizard page as you need them.

Yes, that is also possible, but I only work the other way around with the VEP server.
The VEP server is filled with VST instruments and from that I choose a number of necessary instruments and connect them to Synfire via the 48 available midi ports and midi channels that are then available.
I do not use a template, but fill the device description directly in Synfire with the chosen instruments on the VEP server.
Must therefore create 16 midi channels to make this easier, the instrument category should be set in advance (automated).
Then it is just add the 16 midi channels in the device description.
The instrument names are listed later in the arrangement and are taken from the VEP sound module.
