Rikko (Revisited)

Posted

While putting Synfire 3 through its paces for testing, I loaded this old piece and couldn't help but redo it a bit. The sax is almost unchanged (a few details here and there). The mix is more open, less dense, and with strings and horns added in the B part.

Let me know if something sucks (it definitely does! I happen to always hear what I want to hear. I would be a terrible sound engineer).

Like it better than the old one?

"Like it better than the old one?"
It's like day and night, much better... more musical.

It's not bombastic that I have the six-note chords in mind and build up tension, but that doesn't matter.

Thanks. I'm not satisfied with the rhythm. Now that the fast finger picking guitar is no longer dominating all the time, it feels stiff and rectangular.

On the other hand, it's tempting to make things smoother and more "standard", until it eventually sounds like generic radio at 2:00 AM. It might be more refreshing to identify the few quirky/unique/beautiful things and emphasize everything else around that.

Here's the arrangement file if anyone's interested. The rack won't work as intended, as I've used custom sounds. But they should be easily replaced (make sure not to change playing ranges where possible - unlink them in the sound wizard before setting a sound)

Is it not possible to combine the Structure screen and the Tracks screen into a single screen in Synfire?

Would that add some insight to better understand the structural aspect of the composition?

Perhaps it would make composing easier?

Well done!

Unfortunately, I can't find this screen layout so quickly ?

It doesn't seem intuitive to me, but who knows?

A good new feature for Synfire: if you use Shift click mouse on the tab names and then new screen setups are visible

The screens are stacked.

I've now seen this in the new Band in a Box version 2026 and it works great.

Yes, saving a panel (screen configuration) can certainly be useful.

Preferably as few as possible, because then you have to remember and arrange them again.

It also seems easier to work in Synfire, where you right-click on the tabs with Shift and then a screen is added to the main Synfire screen under an existing screen.

This allows the tabs to add or remove command screens.

These tab screens can also be detached from the main Synfire screen.

So we have panel sets and separate screens

Will this become a reality?
