Selection 'mask' for symbol types.

Posted

Possibly this already exists, but I haven't discovered it.

When working in the phrase editor with figure and symbols, I would like a way to select all symbols by type. For example, in a phrase with harmonic and vertical scales and chords, I'd like to be able to select all the vertical scales at once for moving and transposing.

Even better would be the ability to bring a single symbol type to the forefront of the window. They would not be selected exactly, but all other types would be 'greyed out' and only the symbol type in the forefront could be edited.

Even with zooming, I have found it is sometimes difficult to select symbol elements when they are overlayed with other symbol types.

Thank you soundcase. This will help when I figure it out. :toobad: :toobad:

I'd still like to see the whole edit page become a layer for the selected symbol type, so you could edit the individual elements without disturbing 'inactive' but still playing other symbol types.

There is a way to disolve the part into different parts depending on the symbol type.  So for example, all your horizontal symbols would be one one track, and the vertical in another.  This will enable you to edit certain symbol types without disturbing the others.  When you have finished editing you can merge them all back together again.  I can't remember how to do the disolving but I saw it on one of the videos.

Yes, I saw this too. Thanks for reminding. Personally, I think this is more useful for assigning the symbol content to different instruments on different tracks.

It is a bit kludgy to have go through this step, dissolve and reassemble, while editing to just get to the symbol figures. Cubase has a function, as a similar example, where you can bring multiple midi tracks into the piano roll editor, select 'parts' and then use a drop down menu to bring whatever part you want to the top level where you can easily edit that part (or in reality, track) while still observing the other parts at the same point in the time line/ ruler. This is a wonderful function!

As long as your track headers were set to different colors to begin with, in the piano roll editor the part on top shows its color brighter and the other track colors are faded/ pastel. Since you are looking at the same horizontal and vertical scale, it is great to get parts working together.

The symbol type currently selected in the toolbar gets a higher priority for selection. This is helpful when multiple symbols of different types are layered.

Thanks, Supertonic ... so does that in essence move them to the top layer for selection with the phrase or segment tool?

And does the also mean that the main select tool (the one at the left by the chord tool) will only affect the selected symbol on the top layer?

Also, what about changing the background color of the selected symbol box to something with greater contrast between the colors, like white for an example?

Yes, it moves the selected symbol type to the top (virtually). Selection is possible of all other types too. The span tool is not affected.

Thank you, Supertonic.

I'm sorry ... but not quite clear to me yet.

Are you saying that even though the symbol box moves all of the same type symbols to a top layer, the span tool cannot just select the top layer, but must bring all the lower layers into selection as well?

If that is the case, I wish there was a key switch or something to permit use of the span tool to only capture/ select the symbol types on the top layer.

The reason for this request is that the span tool appears to work best to select segments according to the time ruler to precisely paste them at another location.

The symbol type toolbar currently only affects the selection of symbols and segments. The span tool always selects all content.

More easy symbol separation is on the agenda.
