Windows 8 Upgrade experiences?

Posted

Has anybody already upgraded  from Win7 to Win8 and can tell us the experience. Just to know how many tranquilizers I will need. :-?

Which music programs will 'survive' the upgrade and which need a reinstall? Should Harmony Navigator be deactivated beforehand.

The compatibility assistant of Microsoft does not say much. For me only Kontakt 5 is listed in the list of compatible programs.

In utter seriousness ... I would never upgrade an O/S for DAW and music before it is at least a year old.

And sometimes, never. I by passed Vista entirely.

I still run XP on some of my machines very robustly.

Windows 8 reflects the shifting of Microsoft towards the tablet platform and away from desktop/ laptop. I have read nothing that would encourage me to replace Windows 7 with it. There is already a similar buzz to what happened with Vista in the 'enterprise' world.

I don't really want to run my fingers up and down my monitors.

I am on prolonged 'wait and see ... do not buy.'

Totally agree with you so far. Only the 16 GB RAM limit of my Win7 Home 'Premium' version gets on my nerves. I installed 32 GB and then realized that it can not be adressed.

I did it! I looked into the abyss and took a deep breath. Then I pressed the magic button "Install" and walked through the gate.

Here is my first condition report:

The official pronouncements from Microsoft's politburo seem in part to be actually true. The personal data and the programs are still there. Some of them are even still working. Cubase and Synfire seem to work. I have also tested some of the VSTi's. Finale also starts but the scores of my projects are not displayed correctly. Maybe some preference settings must be set anew.

Steinberg's SoftElicenser is dead. I had a WaveLab Elements license there. Does not start.

LoopBe30 was gone and needed a reinstall. Now it works again.

I have problems with Harmony Navigator. I deactivated it before the happening.  Now I want to reactivate it, but I can't. I get a message "Software installation or modification requires the current user to be a system administrator. Please log in as such or change the current user's permission settings". But as far as I can see, I'm logged in as administrator.

We will see. That's it so far. Could be worse.

Edit: Ah yes, the 32 GB RAM are now adressed.
