Message: Audio Engine does not start or is unable to connect to Synfire (Windows)

Author housekeeper

Error Message

The Audio Engine does not start or is unable to connect to Synfire. Please check if you have a firewall that blocks local connections (...)

Potential Causes

  1. Microsoft Defender, a firewall, anti-virus, or other utility blocks local network connections.
  2. An older MSI installer for a previous Audio Engine is still around that Windows Installer happens to run instead of the updated one.

Solutions

In the first case, check your firewall settings and possibly reinstall Synfire while anti-virus is temporarily disabled.

In the second case, use Window's Apps Control Panel to remove Synfire and Cognitone Audio Engine. Also remove references from:

C:\Program Files\Cognitone (Synfire and Audio)
C:\ProgramData\Cognitone (Setup)
C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\Cognitone

Be sure you don't accidentally delete any Config or Documents folders.

Reinstall Synfire from latest download.
